Okay it might be just over the border but most mornings before the snow & big freeze arrived I was seeing anything up to 3 Barn Owls on my way to work along the road between Denton & Belvoir Castle, since the thaw not a sniff of a Barn Owl just a single Tawny, just wonder if anybody travelling that way has seen any or if anybody has any idea of how well Barn Owls fared during the big freeze.

I would think they have faired very badly, I believe they can only last for about 4 days without catching anything before they succumb, some may survive on carrion but I would think the coming months will paint a very bleak picture .

Cheers Trev

I feared that would be the case. Will keep an eye out in the usual spots just in case.

Some encouraging signs last week, one in between Denton & Woolsthorpe on Tuesday 26/01/2010 & two between Woolsthorpe & Belvoir Castle on Friday 29/01/2010, pity the snow is here again.

The well known Barn owl roost tree at Fulbeck fell down before the cold spell but nothing had been seen for a few months. However I saw one in the headlights on 26/01 in the same location so I have some hope of it surviving.

Just before dusk on Friday saw 3 barn owls within half a mile of eachother between Crowland and Spalding, another about 2 miles away, one at Tallington at night and one at first light this morning hunting along the A52 in the Swaton general area.

Sightings almost back to pre Xmas levels with one or two seen most (dry) mornings between Denton & Belvoir Castle, also good to see birds now appearing on the Notts section of the journey to work with regular sightings last week & this between Redmile & the A52
